A1 Travel Grantees
In April 2013, a friend and I started a year-long travel grant for Bay Area artists, offering $1,000 per month, with the only submission requirement being a short paragraph and a few images of past work. Since then we’ve awarded 9 grants to: Chris Fraser, Byron Peters & Cassie Thorton, Pawel Kruk, Llewelynn Fletcher, Jordan Stein, Scott Constable, Ian Paul, Rhonda Holberton, and Jenny O’dell. They’ve traveled to the Pacific (Canadian) Northwest, France, Italy, Ottawa, New York, and Minneapolis, among others. Looking back we can see that most of the projects that have been awarded involved the production of new works, deeper research and experimental endeavors that have tested the limits of each artists’ practice. For the final two grants we’re upping the grant to $1500, both as a celebration of the completion of the year-long-grant cycle and as an invitation to artists to imagine far-flung destinations, international collaborations, and more ambitious productions. We’re looking for ideas where travel is an indispensable component of the work. To apply email a1travelgrants@gmail.com. Submissions are open from the 1st through the 20th of each month. Send us where you want to go and why, 3-5 images of your work, and a link to your website (if applicable).
Below we’ve included several postcards from past grantees. Click here to read the original post, and click here to join the facebook page, which sends out reminders on the 1st and 18th. My friend wishes to remain anonymous, and while you’ll note that the postcards are sent to Kadist, where I work, A1 grants is unaffiliated with the Kadist Art Foundation.
