J17&A17 Script

Two teenage boys (Aaron and Jairo) talk on the phone for the first time in two months, since the unexpected departure of Aaron from the States back to his hometown. Jairo approaches one year in the US and Aaron experiences his mother’s new life after her infidelity results in his parents’ separation.

We hear them navigate a new long-distance friendship while their realties reorient them away from each other; their lives are no longer parallel. Jairo sits in his father’s truck to find privacy for the call, scheduled after a long day of work. Aaron looks forward to moving to the capital, where he seeks to find comfort in city dynamics familiar to those he experienced in the US. This time in a country that affords adulthood to a seventeen year old in ways the US does not.

Everyone is isolated in search of a beginning. The call leaves Aaron and Jairo at a divergence.
