5 Questions: John Morris

This summer, we’re taking our Five Questions series around the office and finding out more about SFMOMA staff members and what’s changed for them now that we’re under construction. Today we’re talking to John Morris, Visual Resources Associate.

Please describe your job in three sentences or less:

I am the visual resources associate in the Collections Information and Access Department, or as we refer to it lovingly: CIA. Along with Layna White, the head of our department, I manage our digital media library, MediaBin. I am also part of our imaging team, assisting the institution with general image needs like image requests, reviews, or scanning analog film materials and photographs from the archives.

What are you thinking about now that you weren’t thinking about before the museum closed?

Staying connected to staff is at the forefront of my mind, especially since I assist staff often. Now that we are all working in different locations, I’m thinking about ways to stay connected to those working at our Kearny and Minna Street office locations. It’s a priority for me that staff know I am available.

Do you collect anything?

I collect quite a few things. I collect prints by local and international artists, and by my sisters. I also collect postcards and Native American jewelry, like turquoise rings and beaded cuffs. I go to Santa Fe every few years to visit the artisan jewelry market.

If you could spend an afternoon with anyone, living or dead, who would it be?

In the art realm, it would definitely be Andy Warhol and Keith Haring. They are two heroes of mine and I enjoy reading their writings and journals. In the personal realm, I’d be interested in going on a little road trip with Jack Kerouac.

If you weren’t Visual Resources Associate what would your gig be?

I love to bake. If I wasn’t doing what I am doing now (which is hard to imagine, because I love it!), I suppose I’d be a full-time baker or pastry chef. I find baking to be relaxing and meditative. It’s a passion of mine at home.

What should I ask you?

Maybe something about travel, like a dream destination? Next on my list is Japan. It would be a dream come true.
