The footage of Michael McClure, btw, is by Kush, of Cloud House Poetry Archive. And if people want to see more archival materials about Jay, they can check out our online feature here: http://www.sfmoma.org/explore/multimedia/interactive_features/8#

Just beware: it’s in that archaic encoding known as Flash! 😉

At a tribute to Jay DeFeo organized at the Art Institute, just after its conservation in 1995, when the painting was getting ready to be shipped out to the Whitney for its unveiling in the exhibition “The Beat Era.”

BTW, there’s time-lapse footage of the conservation of “The Rose,” and shots of it being hauled out the window of SFAI and onto a flatbed truck–this time not by Bekins but by Scott Atthowe and his crew–here: http://www.sfmoma.org/explore/multimedia/videos/308.

  • You’re welcome, Peter! It is really lovely and I was so delighted to discover it. Do you remember where and when the video was made?

  • Peter Samis says:

Thank you, Suzanne. This has always been one of my favorite tributes to Jay.
