Positive Signs #28 & 29

Positive Signs is a weekly series of interpretive diagrams, quotes, and speculations on creativity, optimism*, and the lives of artists, published every Wednesday through June.

 

positive signs: place/shelter/safety -- space/venture/freedom. a healthy being welcomes constraint and freedom, the boundedness of place and the exposure of space. yi-fu tuan. space and place.

 

positive signs: two kinds of mythical space. a fuzzy area of defective knowledge surrouding the empirically known; it frames pragmatic space. the spacialized component of a worldview, a conception of localized values within which people carry on their pratical activities. yi-fu tuan. space and place.

  • As a Geographer, your visualization of these concepts made me stop and think in a marvelous way. I love these visualizations- good work!

  • When the area of “place” becomes smaller, the larger will be the “space”! What are you fill up this space with. Is it the same junk that can be found in your “place”. If that is the case, you are just enlarging your ‘place’ and not your ‘space’.
